ABOUT THE BOOK

COUNTERACT

Walking Alongside Incarcerated Youth in Central America from Prison to Purpose

Counteract is a nonfiction account of a Christ-centered mission working inside juvenile detention centers across Central America to help incarcerated youth move from crime and despair toward restoration, purpose, and faith.

At its core, the book argues one central truth: These young people are not beyond redemption.

The book explores:

  • Why so many youth in El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala end up incarcerated
  • The trauma, poverty, abandonment, and gang culture that shape their lives
  • How faith-based mentorship and long-term reintegration support can transform them
  • What happens when people choose redemptive justice over simple punishment

It follows the work of Counteract International (formerly Orphan Helpers), a nonprofit founded in 2000 to serve vulnerable children and later focused specifically on incarcerated and formerly incarcerated youth.

The central theme of Counteract is redemption through relationship. Through redemptive justice and Christian mentorship, juvenile offenders are finding new life in Christ.
